During his years in Southeast Asia, Wallace noticed distinct patterns in species distribution that contradicted static creation. In 1855, he published the “Sarawak Law” paper, asserting that every species arises in close spatial and temporal proximity to a pre-existing, closely related species.

- Warning Coloration: He explained why toxic prey species evolved bright, conspicuous colors (aposematism) to deter predators.
- Radical Social Views: Unlike many elites of his era, Wallace was a vocal advocate for land nationalization, women’s suffrage, anti-eugenics, and environmental preservation.
Legacy of the “Forgotten” Co-Discoverer
While history ultimately crowned Darwin as the central figure of evolutionary theory—largely due to the massive weight of evidence in On the Origin of Species—Wallace remained a champion of natural selection throughout his life, even titling his own 1889 book on the subject Darwinism.
