Florence Nightingale is remembered as an angel who walked by candlelight. In traditional myths, she glides through dark hospital wards, soothing wounded soldiers with a gentle smile and soft words. Despite her compassion, this romantic image completely obscures her true genius.

There was more to Florence Nightingale than just being a selfless nurse. She was a brilliant, fierce, and relentless scientist. In the field of medical statistics, she was a pioneer, a master of data visualization, and an analytical visionary who transformed public health through hard numbers.

SANITATION NIGHTMARE: The Crimean Catastrophe

There was a Crimean War between the British Empire and the Russian Empire in 1854. London received reports of horrific conditions in military hospitals, prompting the British government to send Nightingale and thirty-eight nurses to Scutari (modern-day Istanbul).

Despite the heroic efforts of the medical staff, soldiers were dying in catastrophic numbers. Yet, official military reports blamed these deaths almost entirely on battlefield wounds, climate conditions, or the weak constitutions of the men.
